Today is Friday, and day two of the Open in Northern Ireland at Royal Portrush. A great week in golf no doubt, but as I went down the list of players in the field this week, I thought about putting some money down on a player to win.
I landed on Rory, who is from Northern Ireland, who won the tournament in 2014, and who has finished in the top 5 in his last three starts. If that wasn’t enough, Royal Portrush holds a course record of 61, set by Rors himself when he was a wee boy at 16 years old. Sure enough, Rory makes a a quadruple bogey eight on his very first hole, probably the highest score he has made on the hole in his entire life, and his chances of winning were instantly reduced to close to none.
Enough about Rory though. As I sat and watched the other day, I noticed something that has seemingly changed since the beginning of this season. I didn’t know who to root for. It seems like all of the young talent on tour has done something to alienate themselves from public fandom.
Koepka maybe the most notable, was someone I enjoyed watching and wanted to see win. He had a relatable feel to him, after saying that he only really tries in majors, it was somewhat comical the way he approached tournaments, just trying to “hang around” until the weekend, waiting for the other guys to be crushed by the pressure, he even went as far to say that he blacks out from about hole 6-14 and doesn’t really remember what happens during that part of a round because he’s bored.
But the other day, he went to far. To say that he doesn’t really practice unless its for a major, and that he only really plays golf when we see him on TV is just not true and it makes him seem like an ass. Alright superman, take it easy, you won a few majors, get a bigger shirt than a shmedium. Brooks now knows he’s the man, and it ruins him being the man.
Beyond that, Spieth blames his caddy for his own mistakes, Justin Thomas had a guy kicked out for not wanting him to win, John Rahm is a head case, Rory pissed me off by sucking this week, Dechambeau’s a stiff, the only guy I’m still in on is Rickie, but my patience is thinning because it’s starting to feel like he may never win a major.
For a while, I was looking up to these guys, and always wanted to see them win. Now, they’re all just a bunch of arrogant pricks who think winning a few tournaments makes them the greatest thing since sliced bread. Tiger has 15 majors, winning one PGA championship doesn’t make anyone great. I hope Dylan Fritelli wins this week.
